Mitosis: Moesin and the Importance of Being Round
نویسنده
چکیده
Ezrin/radixin/moesin proteins link the actin cytoskeleton to the plasma membrane. Two new reports have found that moesin phosphorylation is essential for mitotic cell rounding and identify a new role for cell rounding in spindle assembly.

Moesin Controls Cortical Rigidity, Cell Rounding, and Spindle Morphogenesis during Mitosis
BACKGROUND During mitosis, animal cells undergo a complex sequence of morphological changes, from retraction of the cell margin and cell rounding at the onset of mitosis to axial elongation and cytokinesis at mitotic exit. The molecular mechanisms driving the early changes in mitotic cell form and their functional significance, however, remain unknown. Here we identify Moesin as a key player. M...
متن کاملPP1-Mediated Moesin Dephosphorylation Couples Polar Relaxation to Mitotic Exit
Animal cells undergo dramatic actin-dependent changes in shape as they progress through mitosis; they round up upon mitotic entry and elongate during chromosome segregation before dividing into two [1-3]. Moesin, the sole Drosophila ERM-family protein [4], plays a critical role in this process, through the construction of a stiff, rounded metaphase cortex [5-7]. At mitotic exit, this rigid cort...
متن کاملMoesin and its activating kinase Slik are required for cortical stability and microtubule organization in mitotic cells
Cell division requires cell shape changes involving the localized reorganization of cortical actin, which must be tightly linked with chromosome segregation operated by the mitotic spindle. How this multistep process is coordinated remains poorly understood. In this study, we show that the actin/membrane linker moesin, the single ERM (ezrin, radixin, and moesin) protein in Drosophila melanogast...
متن کاملMolecular networks linked by Moesin drive remodeling of the cell cortex during mitosis
The cortical mechanisms that drive the series of mitotic cell shape transformations remain elusive. In this paper, we identify two novel networks that collectively control the dynamic reorganization of the mitotic cortex. We demonstrate that Moesin, an actin/membrane linker, integrates these two networks to synergize the cortical forces that drive mitotic cell shape transformations. We find tha...
متن کاملMoesin Is a Major Regulator of Centrosome Behavior in Epithelial Cells with Extra Centrosomes
Centrosome amplification has severe consequences during development and is thought to contribute to a variety of diseases such as cancer and microcephaly. However, the adverse effects of centrosome amplification in epithelia are still not known. Here, we investigate the consequences of centrosome amplification in the Drosophila wing disc epithelium. We found that epithelial cells exhibit mechan...
